The report contextualises the current status of water quality and biodiversity in the Rio Doce watershed, providing selected data and information on the physical, chemical and biological quality of the water and an overview of the terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity since the dam rupture.

O aumento do risco de mudança climática deixa as comunidades do Rio Doce mais vulneráveis a eventos como inundações, deslizamentos de terra e erosão costeira, indicando a necessidade de políticas e investimentos para gerar resiliência institucional e social para a adaptação à mudança climática, principalmente no que diz respeito à saúde humana e à saúde dos ecossistemas.

Increased risk of climate change makes the communities in the Rio Doce more vulnerable to events, such as flooding, landslides and coastal erosion, indicating the need for policies and investments to build institutional and  societal resilience for climate change adaptation, particularly in regard to human and ecosystem health.

For forest landscape restoration (FLR) to be sustainable and responsive to multiple developmental and environmental needs, we need dialogue and coordination among sectors, actors and institutions.

On 5 November 2015, a large dam containing 52 million m3 of iron mining residues (tailings) collapsed in Mariana, Brazil. The collapse prompted both an emergency response, including assistance and compensation to affected people, and a short- and long-term set of mitigation measures structured in 42 programmes. These actions, determined by a group of government agencies, aim to restore and enhance the environmental quality and well-being of the affected populations.
