The symposium was convened to assess experience at integrating developmnet and conservation concerns within natural resource management initiatives, and draw out lessons for policy-makers, institutional development and capacity building. It includes a selection of papers from across English- and French-speaking Africa.
Legal research papers review a project for which a loan is being asked from the World Bank. With a view to potential environmental damage, the publication examines the deficiencies of the existing legal framework with regard to the (lack of) obligations, responsibility and liability of all parties involved, under national law as well as under international law. It sets out recommendations for improving the legal framework and strengthening the rule of law
Cet ouvrage présente la situation des lois et politiques forestières d'Afrique centrale et identifie des éléments clés pour les améliorer. Il place également la gestion des ressources forestières dans le cadre de tout programme global de développement. Finalement, il traite également du débat sur les systèmes de fiscalité forestière en Afrique centrale et leurs dimensions incitatives.
Les plaines d'inondation des grands fleuves de la zone sahélienne d'Afrique de l'Ouest sont des écosystèmes humides dotés d'une productivité exceptionnelle comparée à celle des habitats arides et semi-arides environnants. Une gestion rationnelle de ces plaines est essentielle si l'on veut que ces écosystèmes importants puissent continuer à fonctionner à l'avenir.
The African elephant is the largest living land mammal. It once inhabited most of the continent, from the Mediterranean coast down to its south tip. This picture of elephant range today is one of scattered, fragmented populations south of the Sahara Desert. Estimates suggested that elephant populations had more than halved in several areas between 1981-87.
The Congo Basin encompasses an enormous region of Central Africa. Up to the present day, the area has a more or less continuous forest cover and is rich in biodiversity. The lowland forest of the Congo Basin for instance, is the most species-rich forest in Africa. In particular species groups of the region, endemism is high.
