The coastal zone of West Africa extends approx. 6,000 km, from Mauritania in the north, passing through the deeply indented coasts of the islands and estuaries, then the lagoon coasts and the coastal strips of the Gulf of Guinea, up to Nigeria. The small island state of the Cabo Verde Islands, volcanic and mountainous, completes this geography. These coastal areas are characterized by globally significant biodiversity.

Management of transboundary waters in increasingly becoming more challenging, and climate change is likely to exacerbate these pressures. In recent years, the governments of the Sahel have committed to combat poverty and food insecurity through a significant increase in the development of irrigable areas. From 2013 onwards, GWI has carried out retrospective studies on three existing dam and rice field sites: Sélingué in Mali, Bagré in Burkina Faso and Anambé in Senegal. This report summarises the results of four years of research and identifies parallels between the different sites that provide wider lessons for the West Africa region.
Despite increasing recognition of the importance of ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, implementation remains mostly underdeveloped worldwide. Lack of knowledge on the implementation process present an important barrier. This publication presents details on Ecosystems Protecting Infrastructure and Communities (EPIC), a global initiative which promoted ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in six countries.
