Turks and Caicos Islands

The Natural History of the Bahamas offers the most comprehensive coverage of the terrestrial and coastal flora and fauna on the islands of the Bahamas archipelago, as well as of the region's natural history and ecology. The Endangered Turks and Caicos rock iguana, Cyclura carinata, is found only on the islands and cays of Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), and on Booby Cay in The Bahamas, northwest of Providenciales. These iguanas now occupy less than 10 percent of their historic range largely due to the impact of invasive mammalian predators.

With only about one-sixth of the original coral cover left, most Caribbean coral reefs may disappear in the next 20 years, primarily due to the loss of grazers in the region, according to this latest report, Status and Trends of Caribbean Coral Reefs: 1970-2012. This is the most detailed and comprehensive study of its kind published to date – the result of the work of 90 experts over the course of three years.

This document presents detailed plans to conserve and restore populations of the Turks & Caicos Iguana within its historic range, and to perpetuate the iguana as a symbol of national pride and sound environmental management.

Este documento de referencia, elaborado por la UICN en colaboración con el ONERC sigue el procedimiento de la conferencia de la UICN "La Unión Europea y sus Territorios de Ultramar: Estrategias para hacer frente al Cambio Climático y la Pérdida de la Biodiversidad," tuvo lugar en la Isla de Reunión del 7 al 11 de julio de 2008. El documento ofrece por primera vez un análisis comparativo de las 28 entarget_idades de ultramar de la Unión Europea.

This background paper, produced by IUCN in collaboration with ONERC, follows the proceedings of the IUCN conference "The European Union and its Overseas Entities: Strategies to Counter Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss", which took place on Reunion Island from 7 to 11 July 2008. The paper offers for the first time a comparative analysis of the 28 overseas entities of the European Union.
