Cervidae

This second volume in the Handbook of the Mammals of the World series covers 17 families in six orders; although united here, their grouping as "hoofed mammals" is more practical than phylogenetic. Families detailed include aardvarks, hyraxes, elephants, pangolins, horses and relatives, rhinoceroses, tapirs, camels, pigs, peccaries, hippopotamuses, chevrotains, musk-deer, deer, hollow-horned ruminants, pronghorn, and giraffe and okapi.

Deer are a unique group of mammals recognised for their grace and beauty. Some are also prime examples of flagship species, whose continued survival sustains the complex interplay of flora and fauna. Today many species are under threat of extinction.
