Ecosystem-based adaptation

This book is a compilation of recent developments in the field of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaption (Eco-DRR/CCA) globally. It provides further evidence that ecosystem-based approaches make economic sense, and showcases how research has progressively filled knowledge gaps about translating this concept into practice.

The objective of this publication is to present lessons learned throughout the process of ‘making the case for ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) ’ to government and other stakeholders, encouraging them to include EbA approaches in broader adaptation strategies, and to bring about the required shifts in policy and finance.

This report has been prepared as part of an effort by IUCN to define its position on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and plan for future work to advance this concept and support effective implementation of NbS to enhance ecosystem services provision and address societal challenges. The report proposes a definitional framework for NbS, including a set of general principles for any NbS intervention.

The production and publication of this book is intended to capture the successes and lessons learnt from the CBA-ECA project and to document the impacts of the Ecologically Critical Areas (ECA) management initiatives, key lessons and impacts, challenges faced and future direction for wise-use management of the ECAs in Bangladesh.
