This series of the romance of natural history includes extinct species as well as fantastical species and other species. 

This book is an attempt to present natural history in an aesthetic fashion. The author writes in the preface, that he sought to paint a series of pictures, the reflections of scenes and aspects in nature, which in his own mind awaken poetic interest, leaving them to do their proper work.
