This publication describes the very urgent situation regarding the Iberian Lynx. Its position on IUCN's red list as critically endangered indicates that the chances of extinction are quite real.

The world is facing a biodiversity crisis of unprecedented magnitude. Unless there are radical changes in human behaviour, we can expect significant and alarming species loss in the near future.
The Mediterranean-rim countries hold around 400 million people and 135 million of them live on the coast. A steady migration towards coastal areas, specifically in the south and east of the Mediterranean, is causing pressure on the coastal environment and, more importantly, on its biodiversity.
This book was published as part of an extensive dialogue between the International Council for Mining and Metals and the World Conservation Union (IUCN), which was set up to explore different aspects of biodiversity conservation in the mining and metals sector.
Poverty has become the central concern for development agencies, and because many of the areas that are most important for conserving biodiversity are occupied by poor people, or have poor people living around them, the relationship between poverty and protected areas can no longer be ignored.
The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 and the catastrophic hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico in 2005 have had tragic and devastating consequences for the global community and have drawn attention to the vulnerability of tropical coastal ecosystems.
IUCN worked together with IUED on this new publication which aims at providing a better understanding of the links between conservation of natural resources and poverty reduction.

The tsunamis of Sunday 26 December 2004 struck without apparent warning on a clear day. Not only was there a devastating loss of life, but coastal resources and infrastructure in the Indian Ocean suffered massive destruction as well.

El enfoque ecosistémico se ha consolidado como una estrategia que integra las diferentes dimensiones del desarrollo, tomando como eje articuladorla gestión de los ecosisitemas, además del fortalecimiento y la inversión en infraestructura natural.
Water is both the most ordinary and extraordinary of resources; without it, nothing can survive. Yet, 1,1 billion people around the world do not have ready access to clean water and more than 2,6 billion people lack basic sanitation.
Protected areas are the cornerstone of virtually all national and international conservation policies. About 10% of the world's forests are to be found in protected areas, and Forest Protected Areas make a critical contribution to conservation.
It has become clear during recent global deliberations on biodiversity conservation that achieving Protected Area (PA) financial sustainability will require major changes in the way that PA funding is conceptualized, captured and used.
The present book is devoted to dead wood, mainly in forests subjected to minimal management. Despite the focus of the book on sem-natural forests, dead wood is also necessary in managed forests and amounts generally found there ought to be increased.
First published in 1995, The Forest Certification Handbook has become the landmark book concerning all aspects of forest and wood product certification from policy to business to in-the-field technical issues. Yet since first publication an enormous amount has happened in the field.
