In this supplementary report, we summarise a selection of methodologies that have been used in different regions around the world for different purposes. References are given wherever possible for the reader to find more details where desired.
The rapid increase in food prices in many countries has led to substantial media attention on agriculture. We hope that providing this Facts and Trends publication will help uncover some key trade-offs that mean extremely challenging decisions for governments, farmers, consumers and industry.

Using the category system in force (IUCN, 1994), this document analyses the bestowal of IUCN category statuses and proposes a systematic procedure for making such assignments. A number of selected pilot cases from around the world where this procedure has been used are discussed.

World Heritage properties are some of the most unique places on our planet because of the range of outstanding and unique natural or cultural features and values that they contain. Like anything precious these places need to be protected and cared for responsibly.
For some time now, the European Union has been committed to conserving the worlds biodiversity. In November 2007 more than 400 leaders from business, governments, the EU and NGOs met in Lisbon to explore how European business could improve performance through biodiversity responsibility.

Marine resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) are under increasing pressure from human impacts, putting at risk biodiversity, ecosystem processes and function. There is a heightened focus on whether current arrangements and policies are adequate.
This paper contains a case study on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) that is located in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ).
Increasing incidence and intensity of natural disasters and climate change are having over-arching impacts on the environment. Sustainable development is being undermined. Ecological services and their indirect economic values are frequently omitted from assessments.

This is the second volume in the new series on the Value of Protected Landscapes and Seascapes. Each volume in the series will explore the different values that this category provides through a set of case studies preceded by a synthesis section discussing the lessons to be learnt.

Governance for sustainability is defined as the set of written and unwritten rules that link ecological citizenship with institutions and norms of governance. It is a complex topic because it addresses the three issues of globalization, democracy and sustainability.
IUCNs Strengthening Voices for Better Choices (SVBC) project aims to promote the adoption of improved forest governance arrangements in Viet Nam and five other tropical forest countries in Asia, Africa and South America.
All people, regardless of where they live, depend upon the existence of healthy marine ecosystems. While the role that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) can play in promoting the health of the oceans and seas has been widely acknowledged, progress on building a network of MPAs has been slow to date.

This book (in English, French and Spanish) provides an overview of the history of IUCN in the Mediterranean region, related mainly to the creation of the Cooperation Centre in Málaga in 2001. It also highlights the major projects of the centre and the work for the future.
An enclosed sea such as the Mediterranean is particularly susceptible to ship-associated impacts due to the high volume of shipping routes, long history of use, shallow sensitive habitats and sensitive deep-sea ecosystems.

This book, in English, French and Spanish, provides an overview of the Mediterranean forest conservation and management challenges posed by climate change.
This book includes a set of strategic guidelines and key conservation and development issues for the Mediterranean mountains, grouped into eight priority themes, as a starting point towards the elaboration of action plans for the Mediterranean mountain chains. The book contents are based on the ou
The main aim of this report is to assess progress towards a network of ecologically representative and effectively managed MPAs that meets international obligations for conservation of the Mediterranean Sea.
This book looks at the rationale for addressing the links between conservation and poverty reduction, arguing that such a focus is both ethically essential and a source of opportunities.
