The 2003 version of the CITES Checklist not only provides an alphabetical list of the fauna and flora included in Appendices I, II and III of CITES as adopted by the Conference of the Parties, but includes as well a CD-ROM containing the Annotated Appendices which have an index to family names and common names. A significant help to Management and Scientific Authorities, Customs officials, and all others involved in implementing and enforcing the Convention, the list provides available common names in English, Spanish and French in addition to the scientific names.

Wetlands in Africa are increasingly being recognised as ecosystems of extreme importance to man and biodiversity. However, the management of these wetlands has been impacted by alien invasive species that specialize on aquatic (and semi-aquatic) systems. This booklet introduces alien wetland invaders by describing seven of the worst species already introduced to Africa and mentions several others that are potential threats. It is hoped that this publication will raise the awareness of those concerned and provide them with sources for information and technical assistance.

Our oceans are slowly dying, and the instruments of governance are inadequate to stop it. The international dimensions of ocean problems loom larger as we learn more about threats to marine species and ecosystems - invasive species are transported by international shipping, oceans fill with persistent organic pollutants, and nutrients from sewage and fertilizers cause excessive growth of marine plants. These challenges require that governments agree on commitments and common programs, in consultation with other stakeholders. This report evaluates the effectiveness of international agreements and organizations and recommends numerous improvements. It includes a series of tables and maps, which can be easily updated. The tables present a problem-oriented summary of global and regional legal instruments and an indication of the scientific, technical, and legal guidance offered by international bodies. The maps demonstrate geographic relationships in eight ocean regions -- among regional marine and regional fisheries conventions, large marine ecosystems, major river basins, marine protected areas, and national jurisdiction.

By far the largest habitat for life on earth and the cradle of new species, habitats and undiscovered ecosystems, our oceans are being intensively exploited and heavily degraded. Marine Protected Areas can be used to restore, safeguard and halt the negative impacts on the biodiversity of these oceans. The proceedings from this workshop highlight some of the discussion aimed at developing an action plan to promote a system of MPAs to ensure long-term protection of ecosystem processes, biological diversity and productivity beyond national jurisdiction.

An environmental flow is the water regime provided within a river, wetland or coastal zone to maintain ecosystems and their benefits where there are competing water uses and where flows are regulated. Pioneering efforts in South Africa, Australia and the United States have shown that the process to establish them poses great challenges. Second in the series of the Water & Nature Initiative, this guide draws extensively on the experiences in these countries to offer hands-on advice and practical guidance on technical issues for this emerging issue on the water resource agenda.

Energy has recently emerged at the forefront of sustainable development. The United Nations Development Programme’s World Energy Assessment (2000) linked energy and most of the ills of modern society in both developed and developing countries. The World Summit on Sustainable Development selected energy as one of its five major agenda issues, devising a Plan of Implementation emphasising the role of energy in eradicating poverty. A comparison of the conservation and legal status of the fauna and flora of Sri Lanka
The indigenous resguardos of Colombia : their contribution to conservation and sustainable forest use

Colombia’s policy on its indigenous people includes recognizing their rights relating to political and administrative autonomy, land tenure, education and health. This progressive policy has been implemented through the establishment of indigenous reserves called resuguaros, which recognizes the role of traditional indigenous management mechanisms for the conservation of the environment. The greatest impact is in the tropical rainforests of the Colombian Amazon region where more than 20 million hectares are declared Resguardo Indigena. This publication shows both the problems and the potential of this system of land tenure in relation to the conservation of the tropical rainforest. It also includes a proposal for the implementation of a financial mechanism to support reinforcement of the resguardos.

This CD provides maps of land cover, population density and biodiversity for 154 basins and sub-basins around the world. It lists indicators and variables for each of these basins and, where appropriate, provides links and references to relevant information. It further contains 20 global maps portraying relevant water resources issues. There are coloured buttons that function as a menu to select individual basins by continent. Each continental menu provides access to interactive maps and lists of basins per continent through which you can access individual basin profiles. There is also a button for the global indicator maps. All basin profiles and global maps can also be downloaded as PDFs.
Cycads : status survey and conservation action plan

Cycads were a dominant part of the earth’s flora during the age of the dinosaurs and many species were common even in more recent times. However, many of the 297 species and sub-species dealt with in this Action Plan are threatened by habitat destruction and plant collecting, and more than half the known species are now classified as threatened. This publication is meant to be a working document, and provides an overview of all the cycads and the threats to their survival, as well as a set of objectives and actions to reduce these threats.
