This study makes use of extensive spatial datasets, not previously available, to provide for the first time a comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of biodiversity in the terrestrial tropics. The extent to which potential habitats and closed moist forests are represented in protected areas is assessed. Priorities for conservation action are identified on the basis of a country's relative importance for a given habitat and the extent to which it is protected. National importance for biodiversity is also examined in relation to national and foreign investments in protected areas.

For centuries, genetic resources not protected by Intellectual Property Rights were collected and used without any regulation. They were a free good available for everyone. Huge profits were made but never shared with the custodians of biological diversity. "Access to genetic resources" underscores the importance of informed national approaches to enforce access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing provisions of the Convention on biological diversity. It discusses key issues concerning access to genetic resources and sharing of benefits arising from their use; and examines ongoing efforts to formulate and implement national measures. It brings together contributions from leading authorities in policy and legal aspects of access to genetic resources. This volume is aimed at policy makers, researchers, inter-governmental officials, practitioners and students of international environmental law and diplomacy.

The paper published here was produced for discussion during the first World Conservation Congress in Montreal, Canada in October 1996. Drawing on the scientific and technical expertise of his colleagues as well as on past experience, the author sets out to draw a picture of what our environmental world will look like in the year 2025. Although by no means making any claims to be a definite treatise on the subject, this paper nevertheless raises some interesting questions about environmental trends and our capacity to adapt to change in order to shape our future.

Cave and karst landforms are distributed widely around the world. They have many values and are an integral component of the world's biodiversity. Some are habitats for a wide range of endemic species of flora and fauna, while others house rare and endangered species. Still others are the sources of rare minerals and some are important for resources such as groundwater, while some are venerated as sites of religious, spiritual and cultural importance. Many such landforms encompass one or many of these values. As special places, cave and karst landforms require special management. This small booklet has been prepared as a brief guide for planners, managers and users of cave and karst estates and provides general information and practical guidelines for the management of cave and karst ecosystems.

Books and papers on medicinal plants number tens of thousands worldwide. The bulk of them relate to pharmacology and medicinal properties or to classical ethnobotanical research. Regrettably, information on distribution, life history, biology, population status, levels of extraction and trade, or resource management of the taxa is scarce. Information urgently needed for setting plant conservation priorities is rare and scattered. The bibliography is designed to collect this information from the scattered sources. It systematically reviews about 60 journals for papers with relation to medicinal plant conservation issues. A number of members of the IUCN/SSC Medicinal Plant Specialist Group have contributed literature references to this volume. This first volume includes some 774 references mainly of the years 1990-1996 published in monographs, journals, serial publications, and grey literature. For most 1996 papers, short reviews with a summary of the contents have been drafted. The references are indexed by three types of descriptors: general keywords (e.g. trade volumes, market analysis, ethnobotany, export, population status), country references and taxa references.

Stocks of sturgeono used for caviar are on the decline worldwide with some species now in danger of extinction. This situation has been caused partly by excessive fishing of sturgeon, but also by the destruction of sturgeon habitats and water pollution. Today, this situation is further exacerbated by the smuggling of sturgeon and caviar, by bartering and by related illegal activities. The alarm raised by the near extinction of certain species of sturgeon coupled with the importance that caviar plays in the economies of many a European country, led the German government to organise a workshop on the subject and how to save the falling stocks of sturgeon and ensure that they are replenished. The current publication is a summary of the proceedings of that workshop.

It is not surprising that the issues involved in what is known as the "trade and environment" debate are manifold and complex. What is involved is an intersection of objectives which address economy, development, enviornment and equity. All this in an attempt to find the appropriate balance between free and controlled markets. As the reach of both globalization and environmental policies increase, it becomes ever necessary to fulfil the aim stated in Agenda 21 of ensuring that trade and environment are mutually supportive. The first step in this will be to increase the dialogue between the trade and sustainable development communities. This book aims to facilitate this by introducing the non-specialist to this debate. The approach taken is not theoretical, but practical. It focuses on the World Trade Organization's Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE) first term (1994-96). It is divided into two parts. The main part examines each item on the CTE's mandate by providing a background to the issue and a survey of the various proposals made both within the CTE and beyond. The second part is a comprehensive bibliography of literature as well as legal instruments decisions, for those who wish to do additional research.
