The special significance and characteristics of mountains often require that major portions of them be afforded extra care or protection. Many have received legislative recognition by designation as parks or reserves of various kinds, and there are some 430 mountain protected areas worldwide. The guidelines are intended for planners and managers of this estate. They are offered as a sharing experience by 40 scientists and managers in over 30 countries. They arise out of an international consultation on “Protected Areas in Mountain Environments” organized in 1991.

Eighty per cent of the world's population depends on traditional medicine for its primary health care needs, a system of medicine in which most of the drugs and cures used come from plants. Yet many of the plant involved are increasingly threatened. These Guidelines outline in clear steps the tasks that need to be done to conserve them. Of interest primarily to nature conservationists and health policy-makers, but also to ethnobiologists, ecologists, agronomists and pharmocologists.

This work stems from the Inter-American Development Bank's support to Latin American and Caribbean participation in the IVth World Parks Congress. The region's experts who contributed to the Congress workshops focused on four specific areas: expanding the system of protected area wildlands, economic and ecological valuation of protected areas, financing the protected wildlands systems, and investment opportunities in protected areas. Extensively illustrated, this book explores a wealth of ideas proposed for improved management of protected areas to better contribute to sustainable economic development.
