Abstract:

The Protected Planet Report is a new initiative that tracks global progress towards Target 11 of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The Protected Planet Report 2012 underlines the successes of countries, communities and nongovernmental organisations with respect to protected areas. A collaborative effort of many partners, the Protected Planet Report 2012 reviews progress and summarises the status and trends in global biodiversity protection for decision makers and the conservation community. It is the first in a series that will be produced every other year at least until 2020 to evaluate progress towards international protected area targets. In order to highlight trends over time, this report draws on a range of indicators that cover at least the period 1990–2010, a timeframe which will be extended in future editions.
