In southwest China, in the province called Yunnan, is one of the last remaining tropical rain forests of China. To preserve this area, a WWF-team, led by Dr. John MacKinnon, worked with the Chinese authorities to set up a number of nature reserves in Yunnan. The reserves were designed with the help the local people from 5 villages. The film shows the human impact on this forest remnant and the people collecting plants from the forest which will be used for medicinal purposes. Today, the forest occupies only the fifth of the original area and is a site for wild asiatic elephants. Also discussed are: touristic development and a butterfly farm.
