Description and results/achievements of activities:
We published and launched the Situation Analysis on Oil Palm and Biodiversity in English and French.
Status
Completed
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken
The publication of the Situation Analysis on Oil Palm and Biodiversity was accompanied by an IUCN media and communications campaign that focused on a key finding that banning palm oil, as currently considered by the EU, will have unintended and yet unknown negative impacts on biodiversity and the environment elsewhere in the world. This is a key message that now seems to be frequently repeated in communication about oil palm. We conducted a formal impact assessment of the Situation Analysis through the use of pre- and post-publication questionnaires. Analysis is ongoing and data preliminary. There is an indication of the Situation Analysis changing perceptions and knowledge of readers compared to those people who didn't read the report, but effects are small - mostly because the sample size of the group of non-readers is very small.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions/activities are planned for the implementation of this Resolution
Future action / activity
Convene stakeholders/Networking
Description
We intend to organize a Task Force meeting in 2019 to discuss the two planned studies, develop methodologies and assign responsibilities.
Future action / activity
Scientific/technical activities
Description
We are seeking financial support for a review study on the socio-economic and cultural impacts of oil palm development, with the goal of conducting an objective review of the topic and publish a report before the IUCN Congress in 2020.
Future action / activity
Scientific/technical activities
Description
We are seeking financial support for a study on oil palm versus other vegetable oil crops. Where do these other crops grow (spatial analysis and mapping). What environmental impacts do these crops have compared to palm oil? Can these oils replace palm oil from a price and technical production perspective?
