Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
2019 was an important year for MPAs. The momentum is growing to establishing network of 30% of the entire ocean under MPA management by 2030. Many IUCN country members are stepping forward on meeting this commitment. A large number of new MPAs have been established and capacity is being increased across the globe. IUCN has been supporting the Blue Action Fund that currently has Euro 130 million to support NGO lead MPA projects. A lot of IUCNs efforts have also focused on the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction negotiations at the UN, where a treaty with a mechanism for designation High Seas MPAs is being drafted.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
A few countries are still not being very constructive, for example in the southern ocean and in the BBNJ negotiations. Reaching out to these countries as so far not advanced these measures as much as is needed.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
In 2020 IUCN will continue to focus on both the BBNJ negotiations as well as the CBD in China. A meeting has been held in February 2020 to crystalizes some of the key members in terms of this upcoming opportunities. There will also be significant efforts during the WCC in Marseille and in the Oceans Conference in Lisbon, both in June 2020. Preparations for IMPAC5 in Vancouver 2021 are also under way and will provide an opportunity to advance this agenda significantly.
