IUCN is working to support governments, Members and other stakeholders through the development of One Health guidance, tools and practical approaches that strengthen the integration of biodiversity, ecosystem and health considerations into conservation policy and practice. The development of the IUCN One Health Strategy will provide an overarching framework to coordinate these efforts across the Union, clarify priorities and strengthen collaboration among IUCN Members, Commissions and partners.

Importantly, the Strategy will also provide a stronger basis for engaging IUCN Members in the implementation of this Resolution. By establishing shared priorities, actions and expected contributions, IUCN will be better positioned to mobilize broader Member support, encourage the uptake and application of One Health approaches, and systematically track and document progress in implementing the Resolution. This will help move implementation beyond individual activities towards a more coordinated Union-wide approach, while facilitating the identification and sharing of good practices, Nature-based Solutions and effective management approaches that contribute simultaneously to biodiversity conservation and human, animal and ecosystem health.

2 Scientific/technical activities IUCN, through the Human Health TG CEM and the Forests and grasslands team is finalizing guidelines on how to incorporate zoonotic and vector borne disease into restoration implementation.
IUCN CEM is finalizing the development of an indicator to be used in association with the Red List of Ecosystem, and which can support the Biodiversity-Health Action Plan of the KMGBF.
The WCPA One Health task force developed the IUCN WCPA Technical Report Assessing and reducing infectious disease risks in protected and conserved areas: the MAP–ACT–CREATE for One Health toolkit. Those tools, show how IUCN is developing the tools needed for governments to employ scientific evidence and integrate One Health into law.

1 Education/Communication/Raising awareness IUCN organized a webinar, which had members of the One Health High Level Expert group of the Quadripartite (FAO, UNEP, WHO, WOAH) in September 11. The webinar “One Health Beyond Health: Integrated Approaches for Nature and People” presented One Health as an integrated and practical framework that connects biodiversity conservation, ecosystem integrity, climate resilience, and animal and human wellbeing. Through global and regional examples, experts demonstrated how One Health principles are being operationalized across different landscapes and programmes, and highlighted practical lessons, enabling conditions, and opportunities for scaling One Health within IUCN programmes, partnerships, and policy engagement.

Lack of awareness / engagement

The webinar had almost 200 people enrolled but a low number of people actually attended. This is probably to the high competition against other remote events and due to the busy schedule that happens during this time of the year. For next time, choose a better month and make sure to send webinar reminders every week and day before the webinar.
