Scientific/technical activities We work in the context of the full-scale war in Ukraine, studying its impact on biodiversity and protected areas, supporting protected area institutions operating under wartime conditions, including in occupied territories. We are building up experience in conservation work during a full-scale war, both through research and through engagement with authorities, who do not always recognise that environmental issues cannot simply be postponed until after the war.
We also integrate biodiversity conservation considerations into humanitarian demining and post-war recovery planning.
The information and experience accumulated through this work are documented in publications.

Education/Communication/Raising awareness
The IUCN Academy’s Conflict Sensitivity Course, was launched in October 2025, and is designed for conservation and development practitioners to better understand how their interventions interact with conflict dynamics, and how to design and implement projects in ways that avoid exacerbating tensions while supporting more peace-positive outcomes. It introduces key concepts and practical tools for conflict analysis, stakeholder engagement, and integrating conflict sensitivity throughout the project cycle, combining theory with examples and case studies. The course is open to all and takes approximately 10–12 hours to complete, and is intended for practitioners such as project managers, field staff, policymakers, and others working on conservation and development programming. It has been very well received, particularly for its practical relevance and applied case studies.

Policy influencing/advocacy
Advancing hydrodiplomacy in West Africa led by IUCN's Regional Office: Hydro-diplomacy is a strategic tool for preventing tensions over water resources and promoting collaborative governance of transboundary river basins. It relies on several institutional and political mechanisms: cooperation agreements between riparian states, transboundary river basin management organisations, mechanisms for sharing hydrological data, and regional consultation frameworks. Water diplomacy, crucial in West Africa for ensuring stability, sustainable development and peace in the face of climate-related challenges, directly relates to supporting environmental peacebuilding.
