This very first directory of wetlands of one of the most arid zones on earth is intended to increase awareness among decision makers and planners of the consequences of wetland loss and degradation. It will also assist responsible authorities to identify new sites for listing under the Ramsar Convention. The directory consists of a series of national reports describing the principal wetlands in 13 countries. Over 50 individuals and organizations have contributed some with previously unpublished information. Each report includes a summary of the general wetlands situation with outline map; information on the institutional and legal base for wetland conservation and research; accounts of wetlands considered of greatest conservation importance. The 223 site descriptions cover size and location, physical and ecological features, ownership, degree of protection, land use, threats and conservation values.
