The IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands as well as World Land Trust share a belief that land purchase is an exceptionally valuable approach to preserving biodiversity. The most beneficial approach is for the ownership and management responsibility to be in the hands of a local, in-country conservation organization. This publication is a result of two workshops that took place in the Netherlands in 2006 and in Belize in 2008. Both sets of workshop proceedings provide information about the experiences, opportunities and pitfalls of using land purchase as a tool for conservation.
