Building biodiversity business (Japanese version)

The challenge of building biodiversity business is not trivial. Biodiversity is still largely neglected by private finance. There is a need to develop new business models and market mechanisms for biodiversity conservation, and to persuade the public and policy makers that biodiversity (or component ecosystem services) can be conserved on a commercial basis.

The financial costs of REDD : Evidence from Brazil and Indonesia

This study reviews the financial costs of abating greenhouse gas emissions through Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD). It is written from the perspective of an institutional investor seeking cost-effective climate mitigation options. A review of empirical data from Brazil and Indonesia suggests that REDD may, in many areas, provide a cost-effective climate mitigation option, with estimated costs lying in a range of US$ 2-10 per ton of CO2e.

Estimating the value of ecotourism in the Djoudj National Bird Park in Senegal

This report presents the results of an economic study of the willingness to pay (WTP) of recreational visitors to the Djoudj National Bird Park in northern Senegal, based on interviews with 647 visitors to the park conducted in early 2003. The study forms part of a broader economic analysis of the costs and benefits of the park.

Evaluation économique des ressources sauvages au Sénégal : évaluation préliminaire des produits forestiers non ligneux, de la chasse et de la pêche continentale

The contribution of wild plants and animals to human welfare is widely appreciated but not routinely measured. Reliable and up-to-date information on the economic importance of wild resources is needed to ensure that development policies and investments take account of the full costs and benefits of alternative land uses. This report presents a summary of findings of recent research on the value of non-timber forest products, game and freshwater fisheries in Senegal. The research is based on new data gathered from producers, traders and consumers of wild plant and animal products.

Sustainable financing of protected areas : a global review of challenges and options

It has become clear during recent global deliberations on biodiversity conservation that achieving Protected Area (PA) financial sustainability will require major changes in the way that PA funding is conceptualized, captured and used. With many, if not most, PAs facing funding crises, both in terms of the amount of funds available and how those are used, there is an urgent need to expand and diversify PA financial portfolios, and to ensure that funding reaches the groups and activities essential for biodiversity conservation.
