Adopted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, the Convention on biological diversity has now been ratified by over 160 countries and forms the backbone of many of the biodiversity activities that have taken place over the last five years. However, despite the unprecedented success of this major international convention, many questions still remain unanswered and many uncertainties prevail.

Protected areas around the globe - national parks, wildlife reserves, biosphere reserves - will prosper only if they are supported by the public, the private sector, and the full range of government agencies. Yet such support is unlikely unless society appreciates the importance of protected areas to its own interests, and protected areas are well-managed and contribute to the national welfare in a cost-effective way.

Paradise on Earth is the result of a collaboration between IUCN and Harper-MacRae Publishing (now World Heritage Publishing Pty. Ltd.) with support from UNESCO and WCMC. The book includes more than 350 colour photographs which accompany detailed descriptions of each natural site inscribed on the World Heritage List.

These papers seek to show how environmental economics can be brought in to assist with the design and management of protected areas.

This volume describes the major issues facing protected areas, both terrestrial and marine, and discusses the approaches needed to address these issues. An additional section, drawing upon the expertise of CNPPA's vice-chair, marine, and members of 14 task forces, specifically addresses protected area issues in the coastal marine environment.
