The potential for numerous amphibian species to go extinct in Oaxaca and Chiapas is high and worthy of being considered a major environmental problem. This report summarizes the findings of a project aimed at gathering information at 16 sites in southern Mexico which had been identified in 2005 as being essential to the continued existence of 22 highly threatened amphibian species, the hope being that it could help initiate conservation action.

Wetlands have been the focus of conservation and restoration efforts for over a century, and governments, international actors (NGOs and academia) and local communities around the world are now increasingly engaging in wetland restoration or avoiding wetland degration activities for climate change mitigation.

Humankind has long felt a kinship of ocean-dwelling mammals, and human culture, customs, and literature abound with sea mammal lore. This volume covers 19 families in 3 orders. The list includes 5 species from Africa, 6 from Madagascar, 9 from Asia, and 5 from the Neotropics. Scientists used a network of interdisciplinary studies to investigate the ecological effects of marine managed areas (MMAs) dispersed widely across the tropics. The results indicate that rigorously enforced MMAs can be an effective management tool to reduce overuse of natural resources and conflicts among different uses of the ocean. In addition, MMAs can provide important data for adaptive management of marine resources.

Effective local management of coral reefs has a direct effect on reducing threats and improving overall coral community health. Careful zoning and effective enforcement of resource use within a marine managed area reduces impacts of overfishing, allowing populations of grazing fish to rejuvenate and maintain healthy ecosystem functioning.
