Arbritary national boundaries do not define the extent of landscapes and ecosystems worthy of protection. They do, however, influence the quality of nature conservation as this is affected by differences in national legislation on different sides of the border. This study analyses the status of protected areas across various European State boundaries, lists successes and shortcomings, and gives valuable advise as to how co-operation between protected areas can be improved and enhanced
In the mid-1980s, the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law, in consultation with leading experts from around the world, began to respond to a need later identified by Agenda 21 : the preparation of an integrated framework for international environmental law. It did so by elaborating a draft legally-binding global agreement on environmental conservation and sustainable development, in which both codification of existing rules as well as progressive development of the law play important roles.
Rock climbing is a continent-wide phenomenon. Any ban on climbing in one country invevitably leads to increased pressure on sites in other countries. Thus, regional if not continent-wide approaches are essential to identify sites where restrictions on climbing may be necessary, and to justify, negotiate, and publicise these restrictions (which are often temporary or seasonal). This report examines the history of climbing and its social and economic significance.
This is a new editon of the classic textbook on marine protected area (MPA) management in the tropics, originally produced as an output of the Bali World Parks Congress in 1982. Approaches to planning and managing MPAs have evolved considerably. BCIS Framework for Information Sharing is a set of handbooks available in three languages (French, Spanish and English) on CDRom, with a printed Executive Overview. The handbooks were written to support the growth of information management capacity. Topics are addressed at a managerial level rather than from a technical standpoint in the belief that the greatest challenges in modern information management are organisational rather than technical.
