This publication provides an in-depth review of the status of implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and of specific strategies and plans as part of CBD-determined National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) at national levels.
This plan sets out the policies and actions needed to ensure an adequate, effective and well-managed network of protected areas in Europe. It outlines how potential areas should be integrated with other sectors, such as agriculture, forestry and tourism; sets out priorities at European, sub-regional and national level; proposes actions to strengthen the legal framework, planning and management of Europe's protected areas, and explains how to create the public support necessary for success.

After an introduction to the European common agricultural policy and to sustainable rural development, examples are given on how sustainable rural development takes place in various regions of Poland. Prepared in the framework of the project "Integrating Nature Protection and Agricultural Policy".
After a general overview of the state of Poland's surface waters, the influence of agricultural activity on the (ground and surface) water quality is highlighted, and rules on how to protect water resources by applying suitable agricultural practices are being formulated. This book presents the project called "Bug river valley as the ecological corridor : state, threats, protection" that focusses mainly on the preservation and restoration of the biological diversity of the Bug river and its valley as well as on the promotion of the nature values of the Bug river and its valley. The project also aims at starting a long-term international cooperation between Poland, Ukraine and Belarus in order to design and implement a sustainable management plan for the conservation of nature in the Bug river valley.
