An appraisal of mangrove management in micro-target_idal estuaries and lagoons in Sri Lanka

This study was inspired by observations and experiences from post-tsunami (2004) mangrove planting and ‘restoration’ work in the country. Since the tsunami, IUCN Sri Lanka supported a number of initiatives for improving mangrove management in the context of the structure and functioning of the parent ecosystems – estuaries and lagoons. In 2009, several mangrove planting and ‘restoration’ initiatives were supported under the Small Grants Programme of the Mangroves for the Future Initiative (MFF) in different parts of Sri Lanka.

Wetlands International Goose Specialist Group Bulletin

From February 1991 till November 1996 regular bulletins were mailed to interested goose biologists from the National Environmental Research Institute in Kalø, Denmark. The 8th and last issue appeared in November 1996. During the meeting in Höllviken in October 2009, it was decided to restore this bulletin in a digital form. GOOSE BULLETIN appears as required, but at least once a year in electronic form. The bulletin aims to improve communication and exchange information amongst goose researchers throughout the world.

The status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in northern Africa

This assessment is the first overview of the conservation status of 877 northern African freshwater species belonging to five taxonomic groups—fish, molluscs, dragonflies and damselflies, freshwater crabs and aquatic plants—in accordance with the IUCN regional Red List guidelines. Species at risk of regional extinction are mapped and conservation measures are proposed to reduce the probability of future declines.

The status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in western Africa

Lack of readily available information on the status and distribution of inland water taxa in western Africa explains why biodiversity is often poorly represented within the development planning process. In response to this need for information, a regional assessment of the status and distribution of 1,395 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs, and selected families of aquatic plants from across western Africa was conducted.

The diversity of life in African freshwaters : under water, under threat : an analysis of the status and distribution of freshwater species throughout mainland Africa

This volume gives the most up-to-date information on the distributions and conservation status of species in all inland water ecosystems across mainland continental Africa and the reasons behind their declining status. This represents the most comprehensive assessment yet of freshwater biodiversity at the species level for an entire continent. For managers, this information will assist in designing and delivering targeted action to mitigate and minimise these threats.
