Biosphere reserves

Cet ouvrage a pour objectif principal de partager l’expérience acquise lors de la préparation et de la mise en oeuvre initiale du plan de gestion intégrée de la Réserve de biosphère du delta du Saloum (RBDS). On espère qu’il servira d’exemple à tous ceux qui envisagent de préparer un plan de gestion pour quelque forme d’aire protégée que ce soit.

This UN List is the thirteenth produced since 1962 and the first version to attempt a comprehensive presentation of all the world’s known protected areas. The introductory text presents an analysis and the accompanying CD lists more than 102,000 sites covering 18.8 million sq. km. Significant progress has been made in conserving representative areas of the world’s terrestrial biomes, although some, including Lake Systems and Temperate Grasslands, remain under-represented.

Assesses the role of the MAB Programme in promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, based on the outcome of a workshop held at the 1st World Conservation Congress, 1996. Included are several key papers which demonstrate experiences from around the world. The workshop illustrates that although there is no single formula by which the biosphere reserves concept can be successfully translated from theory into practice, it is an increasingly important concept

This new edition reveals a global network of over 30,000 protected areas designated under national legislation which covers 13.2 million square kilometres of land, freshwater and sea, an area larger than Canada, and accounts for nearly 8 per cent of the world's land area, as well as 1.5 million square kilometres of sea.
