Coastal zones

Des zones côtières d'une grande valeur subissent les pressions de plus en plus fortes de la pollution, de la croissance démographique et du tourisme. La demande croissante de ressources côtières qui, elles, sont limitées, engendre des conflits entre des groupes d'utilisateurs concurrents. Ce phénomène s'est en particulier traduit par des difficultés pour les communautés vivant de la pêche qui souffrent de l'amoindrissement des ressources halieutiques et de l'insuffisance des emplois de substitution.

A wide ranging, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary study, this is the first book that focuses on the challenges posed by climate change impacts on the all small island developing states, not just those in a specific region. As the global effects of climate change become increasingly evident and urgent, it is clear that the impact on small islands is going to be particularly severe. Small island developing states emit only small amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

This publication is a result of Blue Solutions’ second Regional Forum on Solutions for Oceans, Coasts and Human Well-being in Latin America and the Wider Caribbean Region. This four-day workshop was held in Cancún, Mexico in April 2015. During this event more than 40 participants presented their positive examples and engaged with the larger audience in discussions around how these examples can be adapted to address pressing challenges faced in other regions or sectors in Latin America and the Wider Caribbean.

Our oceans and coasts are the origin of life on earth, an important food source, and crucial for the global ecological equilibrium,  yet despite their global significance, marine and coastal ecosystems face a wide array of threats. It was in the spirit of making enhanced concerted efforts at the global, regional, national and local levels that the Blue Solutions Initiative was created.
