Drylands

Historically, droughts have caused extensive damage. Effective responses to drought remain a challenge, with reactive and crisis-oriented approaches dominating many interventions. The consequences of drought extend beyond households and rural livelihoods, impacting industrial operations and sectors such as energy, agriculture and water supply. Integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into drought policies requires a comprehensive, context-aware approach.

This report sets out a common vision and agenda for UN agencies to step up their efforts to protect and revitalise dryland, and improve the economic and social well being of drylands communities through a positive development and investment approach.

Timely action to prevent, reduce and reverse land degradation can improve food and water security, contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation, and avoid conflicts and migration. In this regard, the initiative for land degradation neutrality promoted by the UNCCD should be highlighted.

La biodiversidad y el carbono orgánico en los suelos determinan en gran medida el papel de la tierra en la producción de alimentos, el almacenamiento de agua, y la mitigación del cambio climático. Para restaurar o preservar la biodiversidad y el carbono orgánico de los suelos se necesita aumentar los insumos de materia orgánica o reducir las pérdidas de carbono, o ambas a la vez.

La biodiversité des sols et le carbone déterminent en grande partie le rôle de la terre dans la production de nourriture, le stockage de l’eau et l’atténuation des changements climatiques. Ce rapport souligne comment le carbone organique des sols et la biodiversité des sols constituent la base des services écosystémiques terrestres.

Soil biodiversity and soil organic carbon are vital to the way ecosystems function and they largely determine the role of land in producing food, storing water, and mitigating climate change. This report highlights how soil organic carbon and soil biodiversity provide the foundation for terrestrial ecosystem services. Restoring or preserving soil biodiversity and soil organic carbon requires increased inputs of organic matter or a reduction of carbon losses, or both.

Biodiversité et Grande Muraille Verte explore la dépendance de l'humanité vis-à-vis de la nature et l'importance de la biodiversité pour le bien-être et le développement durable au Sahel. Le présent rapport vise à sensibiliser sur le rôle fondamental de la biodiversité dans l'atteinte des objectifs de la Grande Muraille Verte. Il présente de nouvelles preuves des liens qui existent entre la biodiversité, les services écosystémiques et le bien-être des populations.

Biodiversity and the Great Green Wall explores the dependence of humanity on nature and the importance of biodiversity for wellbeing and sustainable development in the Sahel. The report is written to raise awareness of the critical role for biodiversity in achieving the goals of the Great Green Wall.
