Environmental education

Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) are important instruments for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. CEPA provides the link from science and ecology to people’s social and economic reality. It supplies the oil for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and deals with the processes that motivate and mobilize individual and collective action.

Communication, participation and education (CEPA) are considered key to the implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). To improve biodiversity communication, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation commissioned an ethical expertise on good arguments in favour of biodiversity in 2011. This final report presents findings from an analysis of the German, Austrian, Swiss and EU biodiversity strategies with regard to their concepts of communication and ethics.

The Journal for Nature Conservation is a scientific journal focusing on methods and techniques used in nature conservation. This international and interdisciplinary journal offers a forum for the communication of modern approaches to nature conservation. It aims to provide both scientists and practitioners in conservation theory, policy and management with comprehensive and applicable information.

Sie bieten durch ihre Bezüge zu faszinierenden und häufig regional bis weltweit bedrohten Pflanzen- und Tierarten vielfältige Möglichkeiten, ihre Besucherinnen und Besucher anzusprechen, über Hintergründe zu informieren und für bisher unbekannte Zusammenhänge zu begeistern.

Außerschulischen Lernorten kommt für die Ausgestaltung der zweiten Halbzeit der UN-Dekade „Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ (2005-2014) (BNE) sowie für die Umsetzung der „Nationalen Strategie zur biologischen Vielfalt“ eine große Bedeutung zu.
