Irrigation systems

Soilless agriculture is a modern technology created to enable growing crops in an environment where traditional technologies are median. Several techniques stem from soilless agriculture e.g. hydroponics and aquaponics. Limited water resources, variations of precipitation and frequent droughts are typical challenges for arid areas. Hydroponics offer solutions to rationalize water consumption in arid to semi-arid areas particularly when agriculture is a main activity in those areas.

When Kenneth Wright went hiking through Mesa Verde National Park with his wife, he didn't expect to be pulled into a research project on ancient waterworks. But he was. It started with a structure called the Morefield Mound. The use of this structure had been debated by scientists all over the world.

En partenariat avec Bagrépôle, la Global Water Initiative a lancé en 2015 une étude pour évaluer les revenus agricoles des producteurs et les comparer avec des besoins familiaux (seuils de sécurité alimentaire et de pauvreté). Cette étude, qui est également menée régionalement sur des barrages au Sénégal et au Mali, cherche à comprendre dans quelle mesure et à quelles conditions les périmètres aménagés de Bagré permettent de réduire la pauvreté et l’insécurité alimentaire.

Le Niger compte aujourd’hui 85 aménagements hydro-agricoles (AHA). Avec la pression démographique et la raréfaction des ressources naturelles disponibles pour l’activité agricole, l’informalité de la gestion du foncier des AHA et du statut des personnes qui les exploitent est devenue problématique.

The ancient tank system supported people’s livelihoods in times of foreign invasions. These livelihoods were environment friendly, and had the capacity to feed many a generation who constructed them. Today, many rural people still use these tanks for irrigation and other purposes. IUCN Sri Lanka Country Office implemented a project on integrating wetland ecosystem values into river basin management in collaboration with the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.
