The Sustainable Livelihoods Enhancement and Diversification (SLED) approach has been developed through building on the lessons of past livelihoods research projects as well as worldwide experience in livelihood improvement and participatory development practice. It aims to provide a set of guidelines for development and conservation practitioners whose task it is to assist people in enhancing and diversifying their livelihoods.

This final book of the ABS project provides focused research papers on issues that have not been agreed internationally, and which were beyond the scope of the first four ABS books: 1) ABS issues in sectoral ministries and instruments; 2) legal issues and experiences relevant to designing an ABS framework that is functional within countries and across boundaries; 3) relationships between ABS and international frameworks addressing social welfare issues; 4) concerns regarding inter-framework

The Lao People's Democratic Republic lies at the heart the Mekong River basin. It has an abundance of natural resources including water, wetlands, forests and biodiversity. Managing these rich resources in a sustainable manner is essential to the efforts to meet its development objectives of reducing poverty while promoting economic growth.
