<p>This book aims to build a better understanding of how to build on the opportunities -- and how to reduce the risks -- that biodiversity presents to the achievement of sustainable livelihoods for all. It does this by sketching out ways forward for the more effective mainstreaming of biodiversity in the natural resource sectors, to be fitted -- as appropriate -- to a range of different contexts.

This text examines the flaws in community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) and proposes remedies for many locations and circumstances; shows how CBNRM can be central to sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity; and presents a wealth of case studies from southern Africa – the crucible of CBNRM development Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) refers to rural people managing and using natural resources to enhance their livelihoods.

Humla is a remote and mountainous district situated in the north-west corner of Nepal, bordering with China. People in Humla or Humlis belong to the Chhetri-Thakuri, and Dalits social groups of the Indo-Aryan language group and to the Lama social group of the Tibeto-Burman language group.The main objective of the research is to assess the contribution of NTFPs to the overall livelihood of upper Humla, and to explore ways of how this contribution could be further enhanced.

La pregunta inicial era qué elementos contribuyen a consolidar los derechos de los pastores sobre la tierra y los recursos.

Le présent rapport, basé sur 21 études de cas provenant de 17 pays de quatre continents, décrit la manière dont les pasteurs sont parvenus à défendre/faire valoir leurs droits fonciers. La question initiale était de savoir quels facteurs contribuent à consolider les droits des pasteurs sur la terre foncière et les ressources.

This report, based on 21 case-studies, from 17 countries in four continents, describes how pastoralists successfully defended/asserted their land rights. The question at the outset was what elements contribute to the success of pastoralists’ securing land rights and resources.

A series of dialogues organised by The Forests Dialogue (TFD) between 2009 and 2012 on ‘investing in locally controlled forestry’ (ILCF) was designed to help catalyse investments in LCF by sharing learning between rights-holder groups and investors; improving mutual trust based on an agreed investment framework; and identifying practical ways forward.

The Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategy (LLS) was a five-year program implemented by IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and funded by DGIS (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands). The Strategy focused on four main themes: poverty reduction, natural resource-based markets and incentives, forest governance, and landscape transformation. LLS, originally set to finish in December 2010, was granted a no-cost extension and came to a close in December 2011.
