Este informe, basado en 21 casos analizados, procedentes de 17 países en cuatro continentes, describe cómo los pastores lograron defender y hacer valer sus derechos sobre la tierra. La pregunta inicial era qué elementos contribuyen a consolidar los derechos de los pastores sobre la tierra y los recursos. El objetivo es hacer llegar los conocimientos generados por los casos analizados a una amplia audiencia, incluidos los pastores y sus propias organizaciones, ONG interesadas, responsables de la formulación de políticas y organismos gubernamentales de todos los niveles.

Le présent rapport, basé sur 21 études de cas provenant de 17 pays de quatre continents, décrit la manière dont les pasteurs sont parvenus à défendre/faire valoir leurs droits fonciers. La question initiale était de savoir quels facteurs contribuent à consolider les droits des pasteurs sur la terre foncière et les ressources. Le but est de rendre les informations, émanant des études de cas, accessibles au grand public, y compris les pasteurs et leurs organisations, les ONG impliquées, les décideurs politiques et les organismes gouvernementaux à tous les niveaux.

This report, based on 21 case-studies, from 17 countries in four continents, describes how pastoralists successfully defended/asserted their land rights. The question at the outset was what elements contribute to the success of pastoralists’ securing land rights and resources. The goal is to make the knowledge resulting from the case-studies accessible to a broad audience, including those pastoralists and their organizations themselves, involved NGOs, policy-makers and governmental agencies on all levels.

It is now unequivocally established that climate change is a reality, and the adversities of climatic transformations pose one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. The publication on "Protocol for Monitoring of Impacts of Climate Change and Climate Variability in Bangladesh" is a modest yet pioneering attempt to proffer a systemic methodology to quantify and record the impacts of climate change across selected key sectors.

This study focuses on livestock production systems in Africa, as African livestock owners are thought to be among the most vulnerable populations on earth. Yet, livestock also has potential to strengthen resilience to climate change, as livestock production systems tend to be more resilient than crop based systems. This scoping study is a welcome addition to the climate change adaptation literature as it addresses a dimension frequently ignored in climate change adaptation studies.

Throughout the world and over centuries, small-scale livestock keepers and pastoralists have developed animal breeds that are well suited to their local conditions. These breeds are hardy and disease-resistant; they can survive on little water and scant vegetation. They can continue producing meat and milk in areas where modern, imported breeds succumb without expensive housing, feed and veterinary care. They enable people to earn a living in otherwise inhospitable areas, and embody valuable genetics for future breeding efforts.
