Protected area management

This volume argues that governance that is both appropriate to the context and “good” is crucial for effective and equitable conservation. This applies to all kinds of protected areas and other conserved areas, in terrestrial, inland waters, coastal and marine environments.

This book provides a concise and persuasive overview of the values of protected areas. Contributing authors examine a wide range of values that are maintained in protected areas, including cultural and spiritual values, and how they relate to issues such as food, water, materials, health and tourism, as well as capacity for buffering against climate change and natural disasters.

This book is a practical manual on how to develop and manage tourism in protected areas. It is for all those responsible for the management of protected areas as tourism destinations. These include not only protected-area managers but also local authorities, tourism promotion agencies and tourism business associations. It focuses on protected areas that are in an early stage of their tourism development and wish to do this in a well-planned and sustainable manner.

Ce guide a été rédigé afin d'accompagner les gestionnaires d'Aires Marines Protégées d'Afrique de l'ouest pendant la réalisation de leurs plans de gestion. Il se veut être un document clair, concis et illustré d'exemples de la sous-région. Il s'articule en deux parties distinctes. Une première partie décrit les grandes étapes de la rédaction du document, de la constitution d'une équipe de rédaction à la détermination des méthodes d'évaluation.
