Conserving medicinal species : securing a healthy future

Wild plant species are used for medicine in most countries of the world. A recent survey conducted by members of the Medicinal Plant Specialist Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission suggests that 72,000 species of higher plants are used medicinally worldwide, approximately 17% of the world’s higher plant flora.

Multiple benefits of small irrigation tanks and their economic value : a case study in the Kala Oya Basin, Sri Lanka

The ancient tank system supported people’s livelihoods in times of foreign invasions. These livelihoods were environment friendly, and had the capacity to feed many a generation who constructed them. Today, many rural people still use these tanks for irrigation and other purposes. IUCN Sri Lanka Country Office implemented a project on integrating wetland ecosystem values into river basin management in collaboration with the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka. The project aimed to demonstrate this methodology in the Kala Oya basin, as a pilot demonstration site.

The ecosystem approach : five steps to implementation

The Ecosystem Approach puts people and their natural resource use practices squarely at the centre of decision-making. Because of this, the Ecosystem Approach can be used to seek a balance between the conservation and use of biological diversity. This publication provides practical guidance on how to use the Ecosystem Approach in planning field activities. By helping stakeholders to identify and understand the processes of change in their ecosystem, it enables them to plan adaptive management strategies with which to face a sustainable future.

Customary laws : governing natural resource management in the Northern Areas

Customary laws, established by communal practice and usage for generations and passed down through oral tradition, are familiar, effective and continue to be practiced to a greater or lesser extent throughout the Northern Areas. And yet few of them have been documented so far. The objective of this survey and analysis was to draw out and understand the issues at the interface of customary laws governing the use and management of natural resources in the Northern Areas and statutory laws applied for the same purpose.

2nd pan-African symposium on the sustainable use of natural resources in Africa

This bilingual publication results from a four-day symposium aimed at capturing the general directions and analytical issues that characterize approaches to sustainable use in Africa. The papers included in this work are organized under four major headings: modes of use, devolution, scale issues and external issues. Authors explore these themes through the use of case studies and the description of specific regional experiences. External issues are further explored in a series of commissioned policy papers which have also been included.

Proposes an overview of the concept of sustainable use, drawing from the growing body of literature concerned with common property resources, ecosystem management and community based natural resource management. It also provides a synoptic account of the state of living natural resources in Mesoamerica, taking into account the efforts undertaken in situ and ex situ Conservation.
