Rivers

This study forms part of the Pangani River Basin Flow Assessment Initiative. The aims of the socio-economic baseline assessment were: to provide an overview of the basin and its economy, to provide a description of the livelihoods of people living in proximity to rivers in the basin, and to estimate the contribution that aquatic ecosystem resources make to people’s livelihoods.

This report forms part of the Pangani River Basin Flow Assessment Initiative. It is based on a health assessment of the river during the wet and dry seasons, together with existing Pangani Basin Water Board water-quality data collected at key points along the river.

This report documents information on surface water inflows and groundwater recharge in maintaining water levels in Lake Jipe and the Kirua swamps and water levels (or depth) and inundated areas in Lake Jipe, Nyumba ya Mungu and Kirua Swamp associated with different antecedent river flows and seasonal variations in aspects such as evaporation, etc.

The report describes the best possible climate scenarios for the middle of the 21st century for the Pangani Basin, utilising a range of General Circulation Models (GCMs) and a state of the art statistical downscaling procedure. This should enhance understanding on the implications of future climate change on the water resources of the Basin for pragmatic planning.

This report addresses study area delineation and site selection for the Pangani Environmental Flow Assessment work. The task was accomplished by first separately delineating relatively homogeneous zones and sub-zones along the river and estuary, and for socio-economic activities in the basin. Thereafter, the resultant delineations were synchronised to produce a scheme for all project work.

This publication has been prepared as part of the Flow Assessment Component of the Pangani River Basin Management Project. Its aim is to collect and synthesize present knowledge on the Pangani River system and its users, and to help promote an integrated approach to future water-allocation decisions. It reports on the condition of the river system in the 2006 dry and wet seasons and identifies key areas of concern.

L'UICN a mené une étude sur le potentiel économique de la vallée du Sourou, dont les principales conclusions ont été présentées aux principaux acteurs de la vallée, lors d'un atelier à Tougan au Burkina Faso en avril 2010.

Le but de cette étude est de sensibiliser les décideurs politiques et les acteurs de la conservation de la biodiversité sur les valeurs économiques de la vallée du Sourou en vue d'influencer les politiques d'aménagement et de conservation des écosystèmes naturels. Les objectifs spécifiques sont : (i) déterminer l'importance écologique et économique des écosystèmes de la vallée du Sourou (ii) évaluer la valeur économique des biens et services environnementaux associés au fleuve Sourou.
