Sharks

This book explores the global conservation and management of sharks. There has been a rapid decline in populations of many shark species, while new science has emerged of the critical role they play in marine ecosystems. However, conservation law and policy have been slow to develop, with only a handful of iconic species being protected worldwide. This book surveys our current knowledge and status of the law and science in relation to sharks, with a particular focus on improving frameworks for their conservation and management. 

This report documents the discussions and conclusions of the Technical Workshop that was held to evaluate the current limitations in the monitoring of the shark fisheries and the trade in shark products and to recommend strategies for improving the situation. The Technical Workshop was held in Rome from 3 to 6 November 2008 and was funded by the Japan-funded Trust Fund Project on "CITES and commercially-exploited aquatic species, including the evaluation of listing proposals".

Cet ouvrage offre au lecteur de nombreuses informations sur la systématique et la biologie des requins et regroupe les données les plus récentes sur le commerce des ailerons. Il se focalise sur l'identification des nageoires pectorales, dorsales et caudales des 48 espèces de requins les plus menacées de la liste rouge UICN, établie en 2007, afin de permettre aux services de contrôle internationaux d'identifier rapidement les nageoires appartenant aux grands groupes actuels.
