This document reports on a project for the co-management and valorization of fisheries resources, carried out by IUCN Guinea-Bissau since 1991 (Rio Grande de Buba region). It aims to provide a summary analysis of the approach taken by the project and its achievements, in order to provide a set of guidelines and lessons learned which will enable replication of the project in other sites.

The exchange visit was designed to enable directors of various government departments from SADC states to examine the Mahenye community's CAMPFIRE project in the southeast lowveld in Zimbabwe, as a working model of CBNRM principles. Specifically, the objective was to contribute to the development of an enbaling environment that will facilitate CBNRM being accepted as a key element in economic development strategies.

This Profile seeks to explain why and how some of the earths poorest people have been able to establish effective management systems over millions of hectares of nationalized forestlands, facilitating their rapid regeneration.
The future of much of the biosphere will depend on managing large areas using an integrated approach that recognizes human populations have a keen interest in ensuring the continuing productivity of the ecosystems within which they live. Such an approach will have to meet local needs, maintain or restore ecosystem integrity and conserve biodiversity.
