Tropical moist forests

Examines the environmental impact of mining and the mineral industry, with a special emphasis on tropical forests. Two cases are described in detail, the Carajás area in Brazil and the Mt Nimba iron ore project on the border of Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire in West Africa. The report also looks into the environmental cost of Dutch mineral trading and the Dutch involvement in mineral project in rainforest areas.

The threats to the forests of tropical America have been the centre of international environmental concern for some time, yet the material in this atlas highlights the continuing extent of scientific uncertainty over the critical issues that will determine the future use and conservation of these forests. This report takes stock of the existing situation regarding nature conservation, wildlife and national parks in Liberia, and puts forward several proposals to remedy the situation described - which at first might seem hopeless. Urgent measures are absolutely necessary or the point of no return will be reached in Liberia, with all the economic and ecological consequences which that implies.
