Urban ecosystems

This report has been prepared as part of an effort by IUCN to define its position on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and plan for future work to advance this concept and support effective implementation of NbS to enhance ecosystem services provision and address societal challenges. The report proposes a definitional framework for NbS, including a set of general principles for any NbS intervention.

The thoughtful integration of built and natural environments in urban areas to advance social and economic goals has become a 21st century imperative. In response, this paper proposes some fundamental principles of ecological urbanism for use by planners, designers, architects and other professionals.

Suite au 1er volume « contexte et enjeux » des services écologiques, le Comité français de l’UICN publie 6 brochures présentant les services écologiques fournis par 6 grands types d’écosystèmes français (métropole et outre-mer) présentés selon les 4 catégories définies dans le Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (support, approvisionnement, régulation et culturel).

This book brings together leaders in the biological, physical and social dimensions of urban ecosystem research with leading education researchers, administrators and practitioners. Together, they show how an understanding of urban ecosystems is vital not just for urban dwellers but for everyone, applying the fundamentals of ecological and social science to solving some of our most pressing environmental problems.
