The Great Barrier Reef outlook report 2014 provides an overview of the current condition, use, factors influencing the condition, management effectiveness, resilience, risks to its future and likely outlook. For the first time, the report also specifically considers the Region's heritage values, including Indigenous heritage, historic heritage and the area's world heritage values.

As an active member of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO, the Netherlands National Commission for UNESCO and the Netherlands National Committee IHP-HWRP organized the workshop ‘Water allocation and green growth’ in cooperation with the Government of the Netherlands.

In many cases these conservation areas have displaced indigenous peoples, undermining their cultures, livelihoods, and self-governance, while squandering opportunities to benefit from their knowledge, values and practices.
