This work is intended to be the strategic basis for moor protection in Austria in the future. The strategy contributes to the preservation and restoration of the moors, strengthens implementation in the federal states and intensifies cooperation and dialogue between the various interest groups. The aim is also to raise awareness of the role of moors and peat soils in water, climate and nature conservation.

Die unverwechselbare Kulturlandschaft im Zentrum Österreichs mit Nationalpark Kalkalpen und Nationalpark Gesäuse sowie dem Wildnisgebiet Dürrenstein im Dreiländereck (Oberösterreich, Niederösterrecih, Steiermark) bietet dem Wanderer wie dem Mountainbiker viel ursprüngliche Natur, neue Wege und kulturelle Höhepunkte.

Österreich verfügt über eine grosse Vielfalt an Arten und Lebensräumen. Das vorliegende Buch gibt erstmals einen Überblick über wesentliche Aspekte der Biodiversität in Österreich, die etwa 67 000 Pflanzen- und Tierarten umfasst und beinahe 500 Biotoptypen unterscheidet. Landesweite Darstellungen und Analysen der Moos-, Gefässpflanzen-, Brutvogel- und Biotoptypenvielfalt werden ergänzt durch regionale Untersuchungen zur Diversität der Heuschrecken und Säugetiere. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bildet eine vergleichende Biodiversitätsanalyse der Agrarlandschaften im Osten Österreichs.

The current book presents and summarizes works and projects finalized during the second course of Klagenfurt University's postgraduate M.Sc programme on "Management in Protected Areas" (2007 to 2009). While the first volume in this proceedings series presented the focus on approaches for improving protected areas, the current volume develops the understanding of PA management further to emphasize the dynamic aspects of management in terms of innovative and new approaches and scientific results. 

Die Naturschutzbewegung ist seit rund 100 Jahren breitenwirksam. Der Österreichische Naturschutzbund betrachtet sich – mit zunehmender Anzahl von Schwesterorganisationen – von Anfang an als impulsgebender Motor. In den frühen Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts galten Arten- und Landschaftsschutz vordringlich. Mit dem Erkennen der ökologischen Zusammenhänge wurden das Management natürlicher Ressourcen, der großräumige Habitatschutz sowie die gezielte Biotoppflege allmählich ebenso als relevant eingestuft.

For the first time a comprehensive overview of geo-conservation in Europe has been presented in a book. Geoheritage in Europe and its Conservation includes specific contributions from 37 countries focussing on legislation and geoconservation practices. The only record of the history of our planet lies in the rocks beneath our feet: rocks and the landscape are the memory of the Earth.

PANORAMA is a partnership initiative to facilitate learning from success in conservation. It promotes examples of inspiring solutions that showcase how nature conservation can benefit society. PANORAMA enables the wider application of such solutions through cross-sectoral global learning and exchange. Through a modular case study format, solutions are dissected into their replicable “building blocks”. This booklet is the first in a series of compilations assembling PANORAMA solution case studies on a defined topic.

Communication, participation and education (CEPA) are considered key to the implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). To improve biodiversity communication, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation commissioned an ethical expertise on good arguments in favour of biodiversity in 2011. This final report presents findings from an analysis of the German, Austrian, Swiss and EU biodiversity strategies with regard to their concepts of communication and ethics.
