Biodiversity captured worldwide attention at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro when 150 nations signed the Convention on Biological Diversity. Although most countries by now have had some experience planning and implementing biodiversity-related measures, few have approached them in the comprehensive, integrated manner required by the Convention.
A series of regional reviews of multi-sectoral strategies for sustainability at the national, provincial, and local levels, complementing the volume on "Strategies for national sustainable development". This volume summarizes the status of strategies in the region, reviews and analyses case studies to provide an analytical history and status report on each strategy.
This series presents the results of an investigation by IUCNs Global Change Programme into the possible implications of predicted global change for natural systems and their management. This publication examines issues specific to terrestrial ecosystems.
