Privately protected areas deserve far greater recognition and support than is the case at the moment. Private conservation efforts can often fill important gaps in national policies in terms of both geographic cover and speed of response to conservation challenges, yet they remain a hidden resource: ignored by governments, omitted from international conservation reporting mechanisms and left out of regional conservation strategies.

Communication, participation and education (CEPA) are considered key to the implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). To improve biodiversity communication, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation commissioned an ethical expertise on good arguments in favour of biodiversity in 2011. This final report presents findings from an analysis of the German, Austrian, Swiss and EU biodiversity strategies with regard to their concepts of communication and ethics.

This book is a practical manual on how to develop and manage tourism in protected areas. It is for all those responsible for the management of protected areas as tourism destinations. These include not only protected-area managers but also local authorities, tourism promotion agencies and tourism business associations. It focuses on protected areas that are in an early stage of their tourism development and wish to do this in a well-planned and sustainable manner.

Die Rote Liste der Flechten umfasst ca. 2.300 Arten. Obwohl viele Flechten als Symbiosen aus einem formgebenden Pilz- und einem photosynthetisierenden Algenpartner härteste Umweltbedingungen ertragen, gibt es viele gefährdete bzw. ausgestorbene oder verschollene Arten. Flechten reagieren deutlich auf nicht unmittelbar erkennbare Umweltveränderungen wie Stickstoff- und Schwefelemissionen.

This report provides a solid foundation for the concept of decoupling, clearly defining key terms and providing empirical evidence of escalating resource use. It shows that decoupling is already taking place to some extent, but is lagging far behind its potential. The scenarios show that we are facing a historic choice about how we use resources and the report scopes the potential of innovation, rethinking economic growth and the role of cities in building more resource efficient economies.

Since 2004 Germany established ten Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the German Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ, 12-200 nautical miles zone) of the North and Baltic Sea as a contribution to the European Natura 2000 network. The main target of the coherent network of Natura 2000 sites is to reach a favourable conservation status of habitats and species.

Terrestrische und semi-terrestrische Lebensräume an den Küsten von Nord- und Ostsee stehen im besonderen Maße im Spannungsfeld verschiedenster Nutzungsansprüche. Bemühungen zum Erhalt naturnaher Biotope konkurrieren in diesem Bereich u.a. mit Anforderungen des Hochwasserschutzes, des Tourismus und der Landwirtschaft. Betroffen ist auch eine ganze Reihe von Lebensraumtypen von europäischer Bedeutung.
