The bodiversity of southern Africa depends on water as does the regional economy. Water flows through every economic sector: agriculture, energy, industry, mining, tourism, and fisheries. However, this vital resource is under threat from environmental degradation due to population growth, poverty, climate change and pollution.
A series of regional reviews of multi-sectoral strategies for sustainability at the national, provincial, and local levels, complementing the volume on "Strategies for national sustainable development". This volume summarizes the status of strategies in the region, reviews and analyses case studies to provide an analytical history and status report on each strategy.
The volume brings together contributions from experts from eastern and southern African countries. Papers cover a range of topics including the relevance of traditional practices, and of land, village and widlife laws and policies; case studies of different projects in Tanzania; and an overview of community-based conservation initiatives in five other African countries. Also includes recommendations from the workshop used to guide the preparation of new policy.
An essential reference for environmental and natural resource policy makers and managers. This guide contains for the SADC region and each country: an overview of the environmental institutions in the region and in each country; a directory of key environmental institutions and organizations and an annotated bibliography of major environmental assessments, strategies and policies.
