Las Áreas Protegidas y Conservadas (APC) salvaguardan la biodiversidad y proporcionan servicios ecosistémicos esenciales para la salud humana y animal, desde la filtración del agua hasta la regulación del clima. Sin embargo, las APC también pueden ser lugares donde surgen o se propagan enfermedades infecciosas entre personas, fauna silvestre y animales domésticos.

Les aires protégées et conservées (APC) préservent la biodiversité tout en fournissant des services écosystémiques fondamentaux pour la santé humaine et animale mais ces mêmes APC peuvent servir de foyers d’émergence ou de propagation de maladies infectieuses.

Protected and conserved areas (PCAs) safeguard biodiversity and provide essential ecosystem services for human and animal health, yet PCAs can also be places where infectious diseases can emerge or spread among people, wildlife, and domestic animals. These dynamics make PCAs both vulnerable to infectious disease threats and critical allies in preventing and mitigating them.

This report covers both terrestrial and marine protected and conserved areas (PCAs). The audience is practitioners and policymakers who seek background information on the role of PCAs in climate change mitigation to:
- develop policies that enhance biodiversity and climate change simultaneously;
- quantify the importance of PCAs as a mechanism to reduce GHG emissions in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to the Paris Agreement;

This guidance aims to inform the planning, design, and implementation of new and expanded MPAs, OECMs, areas conserved by Indigenous peoples, and networks of protected and conserved areas at the community, national, and international levels. It focuses on why it is important to consider climate change in MPA1 planning, and how new areas can be established in ways that build climate resilience, adaptation, and mitigation.
