La importancia de las aguas subterráneas en el desarrollo social y económico suele ser ignorada debido a que es un recurso oculto. Decisores de los gobiernos, inversionistas o productores locales on frecuencia subestiman el valor de las aguas subterráneas en la economía y para el desarrollo económico, ya que asumen que los manantiales y pozos, de los cuales dependen, continuarán abasteciéndolos con agua dulce de alta calidad para siempre.

Issues of women’s participation and gender equality in the governance of shared waters have received insufficient attention to date in both the research and practice literature, yet action is happening on the ground. Women play key roles in generating change in the way water is used, shared, and allocated, from local to transnational levels and in spite of legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks that provide little space for their participation in planning and decisionmaking.

Desde el 2011, el proyecto BRIDGE: Construyendo Diálogos y Buena Gobernanza del Agua ha trabajado en promover una mejor cooperación alrededor de aguas transfronterizas, implementando un enfoque no convencional para la hidrodiplomacia.

The Building River Dialogue and Governance Programme (BRIDGE, currently in phase 3) set out to do something quite new: to facilitate the development of international networks of Champions of water governance in its target basins.

The purpose of this study has been to collect insights into corporate ‘water stewardship’ based on exchanges of information and views with representatives of private companies, public agencies, NGOs and other organisations involved in corporate water management.

This document will share with a broad audience of practitioners and policy makers, notably in the West Asia and Mediterranean regions, what integrated approaches are necessary to make water resources management and climate change resilience actions a success.

This study presents some lessons from a selection of IUCN interventions in dryland areas that have adapted to a greater or lesser extent to the conditions of drylands, notably focusing on water management to deal with scarcity and variability. The study is intended as a means of capturing lessons learned from these interventions on the challenges and opportunities for improving water development in drylands.

The importance of groundwater in social and economic development is easily overlooked. Its value in the economy and in economic development is frequently underestimated when policy makers in governments, business investors or local farmers and communities assume that the springs, wells and boreholes they rely on will continue to supply high quality freshwater, forever. Where these mistaken assumptions continue, the benefits of groundwater for development will be lost.

This report draws widely from the diverse experience of landscape partnerships to analyze the challenges and opportunities for businesses and their partners, and lays out critical actions needed by businesses themselves, and by financial institutions, governments and landscape programs, to improve the effectiveness of landscape partnerships and replicate the approach in many more places.
