Saiga Antelope trade: global trends with a focus on South-East Asia

The aim of this project, which was commissioned by the CITES Secretariat, was to compile up-to-date information on current trade in Saiga products and derivatives, focusing on some key areas. These key areas included analysis of global trade in Saiga parts and derivatives, undertaking market research in Malaysia and Singapore, compiling information on the population status, levels of poaching and trade in Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan, and providing information on the availability and management of stockpiles of Saiga parts in some important consumer States, such as China. More general information on the demand, availability and recent trade trends in Saiga horns in China has been recently compiled by the Wildlife Conservation Society on behalf of the CITES Secretariat. The information used in this report was compiled from literature references and interviews with Saiga Antelope experts and government officials, market surveys in Malaysia and Singapore, and an analysis of global trade figures for Saiga parts and derivatives, as recorded in the CITES trade database.

With a large percentage of the world’s population moving to urban areas, clean, affordable and timely supply of drinking and domestic water to its residents has become a priority. In most cities of the world, the primary responsibility of supplying drinking and domestic water lies with public utilities that often suffer from a series of ailments like poor cost recovery, poor and intermittent supply, and deficit budgets. In recent times significant efforts have been made to reform water utilities. This publication shares the reform process undertaken in Phnom Penh that has catapulted a war-torn dilapidated water utility into an efficient and profit making utility.
Sacred natural sites : conserving nature and culture

The book illustrates that sacred natural sites, although often under threat, exist within and outside formally recognised protected areas, heritage sites. Sacred natural sites may well be some of the last strongholds for building resilient networks of connected landscapes. They also form important nodes for maintaining a dynamic socio-cultural fabric in the face of global change. The diverse authors bridge the gap between approaches to the conservation of cultural and biological diversity by taking into account cultural and spiritual values together with the socio-economic interests of the custodian communities and other relevant stakeholders.

Interactions between HIV/AIDS and the environment : a review of the evidence and recommendations for next steps

A comprehensive examination of these relationships and analyses of the quality and breadth of the evidence are lacking. This publication intends to fill this gap by reviewing the published literature regarding the potential links between HIV/AIDS and the environment to assess the evidence for these connections and to provide guidance for possible next steps in addressing them through basic or operations research and intervention.

A sustainable financing strategy for the Andaman

The project "Ecologically and Socio Economically sound Coastal Ecosystem Rehabilitation and Conservation in Tsunami Affected Countries of the Indian Ocean" aimed to facilitate coastal ecosystem rehabilitation and conservation activities in critically degraded and threatened ecosystems in tsunami-affected countries of the Indian Ocean. Two countries were selected to implement the project: Sri Lanka and Thailand. Part of the project involved developing a Sustainable Financing Strategy for the project areas. This document serves as the Sustainable Financing Strategy for the Thailand Component. It looks at the situation in the project area and recommends financing options and other measures that would help to sustain the activities initiated as part of the project.
The status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in northern Africa

This assessment is the first overview of the conservation status of 877 northern African freshwater species belonging to five taxonomic groups—fish, molluscs, dragonflies and damselflies, freshwater crabs and aquatic plants—in accordance with the IUCN regional Red List guidelines. Species at risk of regional extinction are mapped and conservation measures are proposed to reduce the probability of future declines.
Best practice guidelines for great ape tourism

Great ape tourism, if well implemented, can serve to conserve the species but it can also have considerable negative impacts if it is not based on sound conservation principles. These guidelines have been developed for both existing and potential great apes tourism sites that wish to improve the degree to which their programme contributes to the conservation rather than the exploitation of great apes. This publication should be viewed as an essential part of the toolkit for any site practising or considering great ape tourism as part of its conservation programme.

This ambitious publication focuses on lessons learned from ten years of applied conservation approaches of the Central African Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE), which operates in nine countries spanning the entire Congo Basin. This publication contains 27 case studies of applied conservation as well as seven overview articles synthesizing the results of the case studies, which cover different thematic areas. The emphasis on lessons learned is aimed at synthesizing the key pieces of advice concerning the best practices for implementing conservation projects in the region. This is a rich and practical guide to carrying out applied conservation that should be of great tool for conservationists in the Congo Basin and around the world.
Conservation status and impact of trade on the Oriental Rat Snake Ptyas mucosa in Java, Indonesia

The Oriental Rat Snake Ptyas mucosa has been used in the international skin trade since the early 20th century. Concern over the effects of trade, notably in Indonesia, and a distinct decline in export volumes at the end of the 1980s, led to the listing of the Oriental Rat Snake in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in January 1990. Following the Appendix-II listing of Oriental Rat Snake, the annual export quota was decreased to 250 000 in 1990 and further to 200 000 in 1992 and 1993. The CITES Animals Committee noted in 1993 that the trade volume in this species reported as originating from Indonesia by importing countries exceeded the volume of exports reported by Indonesia. The Secretariat suspended international trade in the species as a result of this discrepancy. After 12 years, the ban was lifted in 2005, following fieldwork conducted by the Indonesian Scientific Authority (LIPI) on the biology of the species and the impact of trade. Subsequently the present study related to the non-detriment finding (NDF) process was conducted by TRAFFIC Southeast Asia. Seventeen Oriental Rat Snake traders were visited (15 in Central Java, two in East Java). Morphometric and reproductive data were gathered, and attempts were made to clarify trade structure and routes, to collate views on population status, and to assess management practice. The 12-year suspension of trade in skins of the Oriental Rat Snake appears to have triggered a large, and now well established illegal trade in meat and gall bladders of the species. Three ports in Java currently ship consignments of frozen rat snake meat to China and Taiwan. If this trade, which clearly has the potential to use by-products of the skin industry, is to continue, it is essential that it is regulated and brought within the same management system proposed for the skin trade.
The state of wildlife trade in China : information on the trade in wild animals and plants in China in 2008
   

This report is the third in an annual series on emerging trends in China’s wildlife trade. that aim to highlight wildlife trade trends in threatened and at-risk wildlife, with an emphasis on the impact of China’s trade on globally important biodiversity “hotspots”. These hotspots have a crucial influence on the survival of endangered species, where conservation action to reduce wildlife trade threats can bring about the greatest benefit. While these hotspots might be problem areas at present, they offer great opportunities for conservation success if action is effective. Topics include the exploitation for trade of tigers and other big cats, the origins of timber imported from Africa and South-East Asia, illegal trade on the China-Myanmar border, the consumption of and trade in freshwater turtles in southern China, and TRAFFIC-led training efforts relating to wild medicinal plants and their use in Chinese traditional medicine. Other topics in this issue include the analysis of wildlife trade information from Hong Kong SAR, the coral trade in East Asia, cross-border enforcement efforts, the illegal online wildlife trade, China’s new management regulations covering the coral and ivory trades, and a public awareness campaign aimed at sustainable wildlife consumption. The report found that over-exploitation of wildlife for trade has affected many species and is stimulating illegal trade across China’s borders.This report aims to continue TRAFFIC’s efforts to encourage sustainable wildlife trade trends in China, informing policymakers, enforcers and consumers. Together, these stakeholders can achieve the vision of a world in which usage of wild plants and animals is managed at sustainable levels while making a significant contribution to human needs.

One of the challenges facing great ape conservation is the rising level of interaction between humans and great apes, and the resulting conflicts that emerge. It is essential that we develop a comprehensive understanding of existing and potential conflict situations, and their current or future impacts on both great apes and humans. This will require the integration of quantitative and qualitative data on multiple aspects of human and great ape behaviour and ecology, along with a good understanding of local people’s perceptions of the situation. Such knowledge can then be used to develop effective, locally-adapted, management strategies to prevent or mitigate human-great ape conflicts, whilst respecting both conservation objectives and socio-cultural-economic contexts. These guidelines outline a sequence of logical steps that should be considered prior to any form of human-great ape conflict intervention, and propose possible counter-measures to be used in the management of human-great ape conflicts.
