This booklet documents the achievements of selected projects of the Mangroves for the Future (MFF) Small Grants Programme in Sri Lanka, with emphasis on drawing lessons to improve future project performance. The projects are presented under three thematic areas, namely Ecosystem restoration, Education and Awareness, and Livelihood enhancement. The contents are largely based on information gleaned from project progress reports and reviews, and notes of field monitoring visits. The discussions at the Lessons Learned workshops enriched the contents significantly. All projects were not as successful as hoped. Nonetheless, they provided useful lessons on conducting small projects with communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private sector and quasi-government institutions. And many projects showed how small sums of money could be utilized to produce significant local level results, which are replicable.

The Strengthening Voices for Better Choices Project (SVBC) was implemented in six countries, including Brazil. It allowed IUCN’s partners and members to develop knowledge and capabilities based on experience, thus enabling the different actors to improve their participation in governance spaces and processes. The systematization presented in this document aims not only to identify, document and socialize the lessons IUCN learnt from the SVBC project in Brazil but is also in itself a stage in the governance process, enabling reflection and action learning by those who participated in the experience. Through this, the hope is to catalyse the implementation of new actions led by strengthened members and partners who join together to meet the challenges faced locally, nationally and internationally.

The eastern chimpanzee is classified as “endangered” and of global conservation concern. This publication offers a 10-year plan which, if fully implemented, will go a long way to ensuring the maintenance of viable populations of the eastern chimpanzee across much of its existing range. Chimpanzees are excellent flagship and umbrella species for conservation; protecting their populations and habitat protects innumerable other species.

The estimated 500 million people who depend on coral reefs worldwide regularly contend with change. Whether it is the shifting demands of a global marketplace, political upheaval at the national level, shortage of local supplies such as fuel, or fickle weather, the resilience of reefdependent people is often put to the test. Despite this hard-earned resilience, coastal communities and reef-based industries are going to be challenged like never before as climate change exerts a multi-faceted influence.

The Mediterranean Sea is a highly variable and dynamic environment, with very high biologic diversity. However, human activities have a large impact on this environment and sometimes lead to permanent ecosystem shifts. A broad-based dynamic conservation approach is needed to preserve essential ecological processes and services, and to protect economic and cultural resources for future generations. Hence, this publication aims to apply a process approach to habitat conservation, seeking to ensure that not only the pelagic marine species, but also the dynamic pelagic habitats upon which they depend, are considered when Marine Protected Areas are formed.

Global Biodiversity Outlook is the flagship publication of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Drawing on a range of information sources, including National Reports, biodiversity indicators information, scientific literature, and a study assessing biodiversity scenarios for the future [4MB], the third edition of Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-3) summarizes the latest data on status and trends of biodiversity and draws conclusions for the future strategy of the Convention.

The Mediterranean Sea is a virtually enclosed basin that is frequented by three sea turtle species. In the last three decades the interest in sea turtles in the Mediterranean has continuously increased, motivated by a growing concern for these threatened animals. There has also been a great interest and need to develop adequate knowledge about their threats and about the biological and ecological parameters that are relevant for their conservation. However, the number of countries, the variety of languages and the number of people involved in the region represent intrinsic difficulties for the diffusion of information and for coordinating large-scale actions. This report approaches these challenges head-on, by providing information about turtle occurrence, threats, conservation status and perspectives for each country. It can also help to diffuse information about successful models and lessons that have been learned throughout the region, and ultimately promote and improve cooperation for conservation.

The European Red List is a review of the conservation status of c.6,000 European species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, and selected groups of beetles, molluscs, and vascular plants) according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This is the first assessment of the Red List status of Europe's saproxylic beetles, that is beetles depending on wood decay. It has evaluated a selection of 436 species present in Europe. This study shows us that nearly 11% of saproxylic beetles are threatened. Almost 14% of the assessed beetles (60 species) are thought to have significantly declining populations. Unfortunately, the drivers for these declines are mostly still in place. The loss and decline of their habitat poses the main threat, either in relation to logging and wood harvesting in forests or due to a general decline in veteran trees throughout the landscape.

The European Red List is a review of the conservation status of c.6,000 European species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, and selected groups of beetles, molluscs, and vascular plants) according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level – in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This study has evaluated 137 species and subspecies present in Europe. It shows us that about 15% of European dragonflies are threatened. More than a quarter of the assessed dragonflies still have decling populations. The loss and decline of their habitat poses the main threat, as freshwater ecosystems are facing high pressures, due to the increased water demand for agriculture and domestic use and to the impact of climate change.
