European Red List of butterflies

The European Red List is a review of the conservation status of c.6,000 European species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, and selected groups of beetles, molluscs, and vascular plants) according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level – in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This comprehensive assessment of all European butterflies provides an overview of the conservation status of this important insect group. This study shows us that nearly 9% of butterflies are Threatened and a further 10% are Near Threatened.

The threatened species categories used in Red Data Books and Red Lists have been in place for almost 30 years. The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria provide an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction, so as to focus attention on conservation measures designed to protect them. This latest version of the classification system was adopted by the IUCN Council in February 2001 and reflects comments from the IUCN and SSC memberships and the final meeting of the Criteria Review Working Group.

L’objet des ateliers était de faire un état des lieux de la gouvernance de la mer Méditerranée, de chercher des solutions aux problèmes actuels afin d’accompagner les positions et les décisions politiques nationales et intergouvernementales, et influencer ainsi les centres de décision en faveur d’une bonne gouvernance en Méditerranée. Ce compte-rendu aborde les sujets suivant : Etat des lieux des zones sous juridiction étatique ; biodiversité en haute mer ; et cadre juridique existant.</p> <p>This bilingual publication is the report of two workshops held in 2007 in Tunis and in 2008 in Rabat. The purpose of the workshop was to conduct an inventory of the governance issues of the Mediterranean Sea, to search for solutions to current problems in order to provide support to national and inter-governmental decisions and policies, and influence the decision makers to adopt good governance approaches in the Mediterranean. The report covers: inventory of zones under state jurisdiction, biodiversity in the high seas, and current legal framework.</p>
Natural solutions : protected areas helping people cope with climate change

Protected areas play a major role in reducing climate changing carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Fifteen percent of the world’s terrestrial carbon stock - 312 gigatonnes - are stored in protected areas around the world. Protected areas also serve as natural buffers against climate impacts and other disasters, providing space for floodwaters to disperse, stabilizing soil against landslides and blocking storm surges. And protected areas can keep natural resources healthy and productive so they can withstand the impacts of climate change and continue to provide the food, clean water, shelter and income communities rely upon for survival.

Biofuels and food security

Biofuels development has received increased attention in recent times as a means to mitigate climate change, alleviate global energy concerns and foster rural development. Nevertheless, the rapid growth of biofuels production has raised many concerns among experts worldwide, in particular with regard to sustainability issues and the threat posed to food security. Aware of a lack of integrated scientific analysis, OFID has commissioned this study, Biofuels and Food Security, which has been prepared by the renowned International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). This seminal research work assesses the impact on developing countries of wide-scale production and use of biofuels, in terms of both sustainable agriculture and food security. One of the key conclusions of the study is that an accelerated growth of first-generation biofuels production is threatening the availability of adequate food supplies for humans, by diverting land, water and other resources away from food and feed crops.

In einem Nationalpark ist die Natur vor menschlichen Eingriffen geschützt und verändert sich ständig. Hier wird der eigentliche Charakter aller lebendigen Systeme sichtbar, die durch dynamische Entwicklungen und Prozesse gekennzeichnet sind. Damit solche Naturräume nicht nur in Nationalparks, sondern kleinflächig auch in der genutzten «Normallandschaft» präsent sind, wurde im Umkreis der nordwestdeutschen Grossstadt Osnabrück ein Netz von Arealen gewonnen, die von jeglicher menschlichen Nutzung, Pflege und Gestaltung ausgenommen sind. Sie sollen den Menschen Gelegenheit bieten, sich mit dem dynamischen Charakter von Natur auseinanderzusetzen und sich der «Wildnis vor der Haustür» anzunähern. Zudem soll die Entwicklung der Flächen langfristig dokumentiert werden.
