Ecosystems and human well-being : a manual for assessment practitioners

Designed by a partnership of UN agencies, international scientific organizations, and development agencies, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) is the most extensive study ever of the linkages between the world's ecosystems and human well-being. The goal of the MA is to establish the scientific basis for actions needed to enhance the contribution of ecosystems to human well-being without undermining their long-term productivity. With contributions by more than 500 scientists from 70 countries, the MA has proven to be one of the most important conservation initiatives ever undertaken, and the ecosystem services paradigm on which it is based provides the standard for practice. This manual supplies the specific tools that practitioners of the paradigm need in order to extend their work into the future. The manual is a stand-alone how-to guide to conducting assessments of the impacts on humans of ecosystem changes. In addition, assessment practitioners who are looking for guidance on particular aspects of the assessment process will find individual chapters of this manual to be useful in advancing their understanding of best practices in ecosystem assessment. The manual builds on the experiences and lessons learned from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment global and sub-global assessment initiatives, with chapters written by well-known participants in those initiatives. It also includes insights and experiences gained from a wider range of ecosystem service-focused assessment activities since the completion of the MA in 2005.

For the people, by the people : results and lessons from a small grants programme

This booklet documents the achievements of selected projects of the Mangroves for the Future (MFF) Small Grants Programme in Sri Lanka, with emphasis on drawing lessons to improve future project performance. The projects are presented under three thematic areas, namely Ecosystem restoration, Education and Awareness, and Livelihood enhancement. The contents are largely based on information gleaned from project progress reports and reviews, and notes of field monitoring visits. The discussions at the Lessons Learned workshops enriched the contents significantly. All projects were not as successful as hoped. Nonetheless, they provided useful lessons on conducting small projects with communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private sector and quasi-government institutions. And many projects showed how small sums of money could be utilized to produce significant local level results, which are replicable.

It allowed IUCN’s partners and members to develop knowledge and capabilities based on experience, thus enabling the different actors to improve their participation in governance spaces and processes. The systematization presented in this document aims not only to identify, document and socialize the lessons IUCN learnt from the SVBC project in Brazil but is also in itself a stage in the governance process, enabling reflection and action learning by those who participated in the experience. Through this, the hope is to catalyse the implementation of new actions led by strengthened members and partners who join together to meet the challenges faced locally, nationally and internationally.

The eastern chimpanzee is classified as “endangered” and of global conservation concern. This publication offers a 10-year plan which, if fully implemented, will go a long way to ensuring the maintenance of viable populations of the eastern chimpanzee across much of its existing range. Chimpanzees are excellent flagship and umbrella species for conservation; protecting their populations and habitat protects innumerable other species.

Mediterranean pelagic habitat : oceanographic and biological processes, an overview

The Mediterranean Sea is a highly variable and dynamic environment, with very high biologic diversity. However, human activities have a large impact on this environment and sometimes lead to permanent ecosystem shifts. A broad-based dynamic conservation approach is needed to preserve essential ecological processes and services, and to protect economic and cultural resources for future generations. Hence, this publication aims to apply a process approach to habitat conservation, seeking to ensure that not only the pelagic marine species, but also the dynamic pelagic habitats upon which they depend, are considered when Marine Protected Areas are formed.
